Grocery shopping may be the farthest thing from your mind when you are a college student but when you enter those automatic doors there are a fews things that you can do to be aware and save some green. Warning: This guide is not for healthy eating while you are in college. This is the grocery shopping guide for the person who wants to save the most money and doesn’t care how they do it. By now its a cliche but the best, and cheapest, food item you can buy is Ramen noodles. Cheap, easy and fast all it a convenient package. You can’t get any cheaper than Ramen at about 22 cents a pack or about 88 cents for a pack of 6. Ramen is the staple of a college student’s diet so get used to it.

Never buy brand name goods. Store brand goods are always cheaper and they almost always have the same quality and are somethings better. Every item in a grocery store has it’s store brand doppleganger, you just have to be observant. Grocery stores always put brand names at eye level because they will attract more attention and thus more people will buy the expensive version. Look for the alternatives either above or below the brand name goods.

Its sad to say but fresh fruit and veggies are usually nowhere to be found in the average student’s shopping cart. Fruit and vegetables are expensive so avoid them, but there are occasional deals to be had. Depending on where you live and what season it is you can usually find a good deal or two. Now that you’re out of your parents’ house you have to cook for yourself too. Students generally have little time for anything, let alone cooking, so make the most of it. Mac & cheese, Hot Pockets and canned soup are fast and easy to make so take advantage between classes.
